The following 2 images were taken on a tripod, about 50 yards out from an Osprey at rest in full sunlight. The first is at 600mm with the lens only, and the second is from the same spot with the 2x extender attached. Focus is only available in Live View mode with the extender, but works pretty well. The lens reports back an aperture of f/13
An f/2.8 lens can take a 2x TC and still be only an f/5.6 aperture, so it will still AF on any Canon body. These are certainly more expensive than the $1800 100-400 L, but older used ones can often be found on eBay and Craigs List for around $3000 to $3500 (original non-IS versions), and starting around $3500 to as much as $6000 (IS versions).

Just the 70-200 @ 200mm and the Canon Extender Mark III. The Extender is fairly large so it adds a good amount of length to the Canon EF 70-200mm L 2.8 IS lens. Because of this, you should try to use a tripod whenever possible and when you do, attach the tripod mount to the lens and not the camera body to prevent damaging the lens contacts.

There are few lenses that work as well with extenders as the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens. This shot was taken with a Canon EF Extender 2x III mounted for a 600mm focal length. The results are remarkable. 600mm f/5.6 1/2000s ISO 320 Horse Jumping. For some, this is the ultimate thrill.

I am using the double extender on the Canon 500mm L 2 lens and the image quality is slightly worse than with the 1.4 times extender. I shoot with 7D Mark II and 5D Mark III. I tried the 80D. From the point of image quality, the 5D Mark III and the 80D are noticeably better than the 7D Mark II.

Have a veteran Canon Eos 300D. Which 2x extenders are compatible with my f.4-5.6 Canon 75-300mm III USM Ultrasonic EF lens, or what are the options for a more powerful lens for this camera, please? None of the Canon Extenders are compatible, but the Kenko teleconverters are. However you need to be realistic about what is achievable.
