I havent macro'd it, but what I do is put the person I'm trying to join on into my friends list, then open the friends list and move it to the bottom right corner of the screen in such a way that most of the friends window is out of the screen and the persons name is at just the right spot so that I can right click the name to pop the dialog, and then have the option to join right under the
Entering an instance in a party will prompt other party members to join. Party members will automatically attempt to join the same map as the first party member who enters. If the map is full, players can attempt to join by right-clicking another party member's icon or name and select "Join In" while in the same zone.

I was trying do do the most recent LW story step, The Invitation with a LFG party, but we could not figure out how to enter the instance together. We were next to each other in Bjora Marches, but when one of us went in, no notification would show for the rest of the team to join.
So, the normal guild hall instance only holds 5 players. Once one more person enters, it asks everyone to volunteer for an instance that can hold 10 people. Once an 11th person joins, it asks you to volunteer again for an instance that can hold 15 people. And so on.
If you're both in the same open world map, then you should be able to join each other's instances (unless they're full). If you're in story instances (including the first one when you're still level 1), in dungeons, in WvW or PvP, and possibly a few other situations I forgot, then you cannot join each other that way.
If you can see your friend, click on their character, then right click their character portrait and choose Group -> Join Group from the menu. You can also right click their portrait and choose Additional Commands -> Add to Friends list if you want to better see when they come on and offline.

IMO gw2 is fabulous for friends. It’s co-op friendly for story mode (after level 60, earlier if you choose the same backstory starting options and/or same level 40 options). It’s great until your goals & levels of commitment to the goals diverge. Then it can be challenging but that is true with pretty much any MMO.
